Chef Kari Shaughnessy offers "New Northwest" fare where locally-sourced ingredients take center stage and are transformed through her restless curiosity for new techniques. Though the menu is as ever-changing as Kari's appetite for experimentation, it's anchored by Hayward’s core principles: hyper-local, hyper-seasonal sourcing, celebrating vegetables at peak seasonality, and zero-waste practices that honor every part of the plant and animal.
Chef Kari—who left Michelin kitchens in San Francisco to get closer to the source—has established herself as a rising star, world-class chef in McMinnville’s wine country, receiving a James Beard finalist nomination for Best New Restaurant in 2024 and a semifinalist nomination for Best Chef (NW and Pacific) in 2025.
In 2024, the 32-year-old chef established herself as sole owner of Hayward and in June 2025 moved the restaurant to its next chapter in Carlton, Oregon. With full control over every detail, Kari and her team can deliver the complete hospitality experience that’s always been at the heart of Hayward. With dishes born from curiosity and rooted in community, where friends and suppliers, locals and tourists sit side by side, it’s a place where everyone belongs.
